Ariana Remmel was born in Little Rock, AR to two psychiatrist parents. They grew up loving animals and exploring the outdoors. In search of better educational opportunities, Ariana finished high school at Phillips Academy in Andover, MA in 2014 before attending college at Reed College in Portland, OR until 2019.
After graduating with a degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Ariana moved to San Diego, CA to scuba dive and research marine natural products chemistry at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. They then began a PhD in Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of California, San Diego.
By Ariana’s second year in graduate school, however, they began to realize that their passions were shifting outside of research chemistry. Ariana decided to leave their program with a Masters in Chemistry in 2019 to attend the Science Communication Masters Program at the University of California, Santa Cruz.
Now Ariana is a graduate student at UC Santa Cruz where they are learning the craft of science journalism. When not in class or working at their internship, Ariana likes to bird watch in the Santa Cruz Mountains, train on their cyr wheel, and volunteer for Burning Man events.
