Ariana Remmel was born in Little Rock, Arkansas and grew up exploring nature. After finishing high school at Phillips Academy in Andover, MA in 2009, Ariana moved across the country to attend Reed College in Portland, Oregon.

After graduating with a degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in 2014, Ariana moved to San Diego, California to scuba dive and research marine natural products chemistry at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. They then began a PhD in Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of California, San Diego.

By Ariana’s third year in graduate school, however, they began to realize that their passions were shifting outside of research chemistry. Ariana decided to leave their program with a Masters in Chemistry in 2019 to attend the Science Communication Masters Program at the University of California, Santa Cruz with support from the ARCS Foundation. After graduating, Ariana was named a 2020 Diversity Fellow by the National Association of Science Writers.
